When was the last time you did something for someone? I am not talking about giving blood,or building a house,or loaning money, although those are often fine things. And I am certainly not talking about donating to this cause or that, which are sometimes fine things but often not.

Rather, I am talking about smiling hello at someone. Opening a door. Helping pick up something that has been dropped. If there is such a thing as karma I think these are the things that count. The little things, soon forgotten on a conscious level by the other person but which help their day go a little better.

I joined a cult that is called the Karma army, we are required to do a good deed for a stranger every Friday. Unfortunately I have got it wrong in the past. I was walking along the road behind a young man. He dropped his cigarette packet and being an ex smoker I remembered how upset I would have been if I lost my cigs, so I picked up the packet and ran after him. Caught up to him and said "you dropped this". He didn't thank me, in fact he gave me an odd look. Its ok though I told myself a good deed is its own reward. I was still following him and as he passed a bin he dropped his cigarette packet in it. Oops I gave him back his litter.

Different sort of good karma I imagine..making others do good without meaning to?

I open doors for people and let people into traffic all the time. Is that weird?

I have always opened doors for people, let them go ahead of me, pick things up, wave say hello, smile, offer help, give the help right away.
As I now work at Citibank I see a lot of people coming and going. I hold the door for all of them. Once everyone else has gone I go. When passing in a tight hallway/walkway I always stop and let them pass. What you describe (not the donating. It is my nature to do these things. Always have always will. I even do such things for people that I do not really get along with. And no I do not do it to rub it in their face, I just do it.

I try to do this kind of thing as much as possible. I figure building up a bank of good karma is always a good thing. ;)

nah, seriously? I think I'm just basically a nice person. I blame my parents.

Of course in your case not setting them on fire and having them as snack food is in the good thing category?

Well, yes. If I really like someone, I always try to make them part of a whole meal. :D
