Obviously fantasy is full of subgenres, which I shall try to get to at some point. Some aspects
Classic Fantasy aka folklore and folk tales as they began to be collected and literified as it were
High Fantasy The traditional elves etc. Which started, not with JRR as many people think, but with Lord Dunsany and George Macdonald.
Dark Fantasy sometimes known as horror, but not always. Started by Poe and Lovecraft and still a major player.
Sword and Sorcery sort of the country cousin of High Fantasy. And much beloved of gamers.
Science Fantasy which often gets confused with Science Fiction but which is really not the same.
Urban Mythology Which is modern reality twisted a bit. Charles de Lint, Neil Gaiman to a degree, Terri Windling just to name a few
Magic Realism Which in a way is Urban Mythology marketed for literary fiction.
and others I am sure, but that is a start.
