So, back to fanfic. I have written one piece of fanfic in my life, which I was asked to do and which in retrospect is one piece too many. But I come here today not as a writer but as a reader. Even though I am writing it..don't you love the occasional paradox.

I do not read fanfic. I have no desire to read fanfic. If you want to cosplay that is fine. Where would fandom be without cosplay? And I know a number of people who do it quite well.

The thing is,imho, that cosplay is reflective of a piece of fiction,whether it comes from print or electronic media. Fanfic on the other hand, is at best an attempt to extend a creative universe by one of the new gods in town, and at worse blatant plagiarism.

Take Newford as an example. And if you have not yet partaken of the Newford world than get thee to a library. Or better yet a bookstore, for Charles de lint,the author, is alive and well and would probably appreciate both the vote of confidence and the royalties. I devour each and every new book that has something of Newford about it. And I always want more.

But, I want them written by Charles. It is his universe, and the people that walk the streets are his children.

Now. This is not to say that I think writers of fanfic are not creative and talented themselves. Rather it is that I believe you ARE creative and talented. And I know that somewhere inside you are the next Crow Sisters or Kirk or Dr Who or. Not those characters redone but new characters. In a new Universe that you have started creating and which you can populate with characters and problems and ideas of your own over the next few decades.
