ah yes...drugs. the Communion of the 60s. Every era has had its drugs and in the 60s it was..well..just about everything. marijuana was our beer,the mellowing magic. There was acid for wannabe internal trippers really out to party. And peyote and mescaline for the more serious..well sometimes. Along with bananas and nutmeg and..etc.

Not that it was all drugs all the time. It was just some drugs all the time. Needles were,as a rule, considered anethma by the culture. As were depressants. But somewhere at all times in the 60s there was a sweet blue cloud floating over North America..and I am told much of Europe. When we woke up in the 70s, that is when the other drugs became big.

Pot/grass, you couldn't go anywhere in Cambridge without getting a serious contact high, more so if you already smoked since pot is
anti-addictive/habituating in that the more you smoked the less you needed to get high.

It fell way down in popularity by 1970 when faux "hippies" (jocks and the like, not heads but basically straight types-the old meaning) used it like beer, often with downers and since it was a learning drug, acted like they were obnoxiously drunk. They gave off nasty vibes, bought everyone near them down.

Reality and responsibility gradually caught up with us.

Heads gradually evolved into stoners over the next decade or so.

Other drugs:
Mushrooms and STP (for a while, the business man's LSD, 30-60 min lunch break high
but it fell out of favour very quick, too powerful and tended to bad trips)

Morning Glory seeds, etc. Lots of experimentation. I could get high smoking catnip as could some of my friends ;)

Speed Freaks (meth) were anathema too, though in the mid sixties, Black Beauty capsules (dexedrine) and Desbutal were ok for short term for work and study. Go longer than a couple of days on them
and you crashed. Hard. As in fall over, exhausted from no sleep.

Desbutal with hash was sometimes the poor mans mescaline. Very Colour trippy.

Nepalese Hash...
and Opium though that was rare and regarded with great caution.

Thai sticks, pricey, powerful, one-two tokes, you floated off the floor and all the shadows turned purple :)

DMT, not STP, what was i thinking ?

At least i think it was DMT probably aka dimethyltriptomane,
dunno, never took it.

I do not know about DMT, but there was a drug known as STP..which were not initials for a chemical compound but named after the oil additive. Makes the brain run smoother I assume.
