This month is about the 60s. But perhaps not exactly the 60s that most of you think of? What people think of as the 60s actually started in the late 50s and lasted until..oh..say the fall of Nixon. And was hardly a uniform period of time. The 60s was not just sex, drugs and rock and roll. That was,to a large part something that grew out of New York exiles meeting surfers. The east coast, especially New York and Boston, were more about folk than rock for a good part of it, and literature marched in step with the licentious more than the west coast, at least at first. It was about politics and poetry and fiction and art...and music. Well, and sex. And for a number of people..drugs. But even that varied. Different people, different reasons.
So what I am going to try to do is provide a brief sampler of what I remember, not all of which I was really involved in (I was 8 when everything started) but rather read and listened and envied as I grew older. From the first appearance of a maple leaf on the Canadian flag to the US flag change up till, as mentioned, the resignation of Richard Nixon. Surfers, Beatniks,Hippies,Yippies,Freedom Riders etc etc etc.
