[livejournal.com profile] spiral5 made a comment I still am thinking about. He was talking about V for Vendetta and mentioned that he was glad that he had not read the book yet.

If you have a good book and a good movie, but one differs from the other, which would you rather do first..read the book or see the movie. Perhaps I am old fashioned, but books will always be more important to me. On the other hand, I hope I am discerning enough to know why there are differences between movie and book. Not always, but usually.

I like to read the book first so that I can shout at the movie when I don't like the way it portrays something. Shouting at books just isn't as satisfying somehow.

I prefer to read the book first, except in the very rare case that the book is based on the movie. For one thing, when reading the book, I can get my own pictures of the characters in my head; then it's interesting to see how they compare with the movie casting.

I always like to see the movie first, for the reason you have already stated: ...books will always be more important to me.

But one of my favourite games is seeing how well the actors match the character my mind has described to me?

That's fine for you, but you asked about me. And the whole wolrd revolves around me, you know. =grin=

Seriously, comparing the characters are a fun thing to do. I simply like doing it in reverse. The film is a visual throwaway. It's an appetizer. I'm much more tolerant of the film, which can never meet the level of my imagination. I can see the added depth of the book as an expansion of the film, instead of getting upset at what they cut out or got wrong.

LOL Close. I'm owned by four of them. The only way I've discovered to remain nominally in control of the house is by keeping them illiterate. So they only get the movies to watch.

Mine is far too interested in controlling the PC to be distracted by books or movies.
