The west side of Cincinnati ( and I think it not unusual for cities) is dotted with empty churches and the occasional synagogue. The synagogues are empty because the membership moved on, leaving the rare building and several cemetaries. The churches are empty because they were built during the preauto era when neighbourhood and parish were the same thing. One of them is with walking distance of me, founded by a german order which used woodcarving instead of stonecutting inside the church. The statuary and confessionals have long since been removed, leaving the building quite empty, there being no Alice in the area I suppose.
