Spelling in the middle ages was a much more competitive sport that it is today. Sort of the Rugby Union of the Linguistic era. Thus the reason for some confusion over when Shakespeare was born, and to who. In fact one of the more popular spellings of the last name was not Shakespeare but Shagspeare. Regardless of this the name has fairly died out. But not before...during some time in April, Will was born.
