1969 Three days of peace love and rock and roll. Ok..three days of drugs sex and roll and roll..it all comes out the same. half a million people gathered at Max's farm in New York for an outdoor music festival. And mud..lots and lots of mud which seems to bother nobody. It is a gathering, a celebration,an event which others will try to repeat later. It will be the Camelot for future generations to think about..but you can't go home again.
On a rooftop in London the Beatles sang a farewell to the world. The world would miss them although the records would keep coming, and each of them had at least a bit of a solo career. Ringo even got to play with trains later.
In other modes of transportation, the Who move away from their Magic Bus and into writing opera with Tommy.
1970 Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin die within a month of each other. They are followed the next year by Jim Morrison and Duane Allman. Over the next few years supergroups and stars come and go. Smokey Robinson leaves the Miracles. Little Stevie Wonder leaves the little. Crosby Stills Nash & Young leave each other to join ..err..each other. Led Zeppelin sets records with their live tours. Pink Floyd releases Dark Side of the Moon..proof that a min altering substance can be duplicated in music. Bob Dylan and the Band tour and then the Band waltz away into the night.
1977..Elvis Presley dies. How alive he had been for a few years had been debatable, but people had held out hopt.
next..did a movie kill rock and roll, or was it just a keen fashion sense?
