The first thing that Merlin did, being magic and with a keen fashion sense,is to invent the curtain. Because he did not get around to electric lighting, this made this the 'dark age' Of course this also helped hide the fact that most of the century was actually created in the 11th Century and beyond. In this case the time was much like an early version of the internet, where the facts are often created long after the original incident has occured.
Meanwhile..the Premier League not having been formed yet,and without a decent pub around, Arthur decided to imitate the Romans, except without the rape and pillage part..well at least not mostly.
