My mother's family were farmers. People do not understand these days why people would do such a thing, including many of the people who work farms. Mostly, I think because they do not feel the earth. Even the ones who toil in the fields usually do so from the seat of giant machines, with climate control, earning a pay voucher from one of the agriconglams. But to feel the earth shift through your fingers as though a lover were carressing you. Or shift over your feet as you walk as though the land were a kitten playing with you. It does not matter which kind of soul, thick loam or rocky and clayfilled. So long as you stay open to it the earth can move through your soul as though you yourself were part of the earth, being blown along the universe in a greeting from field to field.
