Mar. 2nd, 2007 02:07 amOr..if lumberjacks became an all girl punk bank would they still boogie....err...scratch that first thought.
Anyway, flu or no I had promised I would show for the Peggy Sues and so I did. I actually had hope for the first band when a fellow with a five string bass came out and started warming up, playing fairly well. However, then the other two showed up. No, not the Peggy Sues but the Kevins. They owe my son an apology imho. The bass player can play but lacks the security to do so. The lead guitarist might be able to play guitar, if only he would stop playing it so much. A bit of lead goes a long way. And one cannot blame either of them that much for the simple fact that the drummer could..not..drum. More on that later though.
Next up was an odd experience. A group called Flux Capacitor. To be precise an instrumental group. Surf even. Complete with retro instruments. And while it seemed obvious that they had not been together for very long, they were an unusual and not unenjoyable act to listen to. I cannot see listening to them all day long, but I am interested to see how they progress.
Then came the Peggy Sues. One of the things that you notice about the Peggy Sues (ok...after you notice how cute they all are) is that they have fun. The last time I saw them that fact did not come across quite as much, due in part to a bit of nerves? This time they were much more relaxed. Lisa had a minor glitch with her strings, but these things happen. The important thing was that she did not let it bother her. Theresa's voice was much more confident, which I would not have realised until I head her. Ashley was much more forthright in her guitar playing.
I make fun of our drummer. Ok,we all make fun of our drummer. But without his skills on the drums Nil would be a far different group. And I think the same could be said for the Peggy Sues. Rachael is a good, solid drummer. To repeat..fun. Far too many groups get started for the ego of it. The Peggy Sues like having fun. They practise, obviously, to make it more fun. Which means their audience has more fun. Which in turn makes it...you guessed it, more fun.
Are they a perfect group? Obviously not. Nor, to be honest, is it a type of music that will ever become my favourite. But perhaps that is a problem of mine, not knowing how to have fun?
