We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, "O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life? Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse." ..What will your verse be?"

A lot of what LJ is about is drama. Admit it,we all (myself included) have the occasional drama or angsty posts. Of course I look around and see that compared with many I am pretty much a second-stringer when it comes to such things.

But what I have noticed of late is that for many on my flist it has moved from drama to documentary. That is to say, people with serious medical problems, people who have family members who have serious medical problems. People who have serious job problems. Not the usual I hate my job (cool..you are sane then) but people who have no jobs, or jobs that do not make ends meet. Or people with stalkers at work, bosses who ignore labour laws etc.People facing serious life changes, job changes involving long moves, relationship changes etc.

Makes me feel a bit of a whiner it does. And frustrated that I can't help any of them that I know of. Would if I could if that helps?
