an idle thought

The Battle of Britain was arguably the first battle to take place in full view of civilians.,speaking of the actual fighter conflicts and not the bombing part?

Hmm, WWI fighters over France were in view of the people on the ground and there were even a few reports of innocent bystanders on the ground getting killed by gunfire from the aircraft. Of course, all of this is my recollection from readings many moons ago. Then again, would those incidents qualify as "battles" the same way the Battle of Britain was a battle.

To continue the analogy? I would say those would count more as skirmishes than full scale battles.
