why I do not do fandom (with apologies ..

to trekkers and browncoats or whoever).

I used to, I truly did. To the best of my knowledge I am the only phouka/chaun ever to graduate Star Fleet Academy and I served on the Aquila as a xenolinguist. I have even had fanfic published.

And I do miss the camaradie, this I will freely admit. But I also got to the point where I had to say to myself, self (and when myself hears that tone of voice it knows I am about to have a serious conversation with me)this is all well and good, but don't you think you could spend a little time in building your own universe?? Now there is a concept. and a dozen or so stories later I pretty well have started. So it is not that I have anything against fandom,I just have, hmm,,different, things to spend my imagination on.

Speaking of which..my own new year's resolutions..coming soon to a post near you.

I think this is why I have gotten away from fanfic and whatnot. Sometimes I really need a base to help me write...the most acceptable in the literary world being Arthurian legend. I do spend a lot of time RPing on AOL and in D&D land (although the latter is arguably more of a social hobby akin to bowling or something), but my AOL characters are now being used in my own world. They were different enough to lump all of them together in one new world, though I'd never intended upon it. I always feel more productive when I write something ABOUT a fandom (issue, hobby, religion, etc.) than writing fanfiction. I hope this doesn't mean that I use it as a crutch or that my imagination died...I recall that my greatest teenage success involved finishing the sequel to Jurassic Park before Michael Chrichton (or however you spell it) did.

I anxiously await your new year's resolution post.

You served on the Aquila? Man, I remember when that chapter started. I was serving on the Polaris at the time, and I was dating Joy ([livejournal.com profile] trekwriter), who became the CO of the Aquila.

Small world ...

As for writing fan fiction, I just say no. Of course, I'm not really saying yes to much other writing these days (new year's resolution: write, dammit), but I think I wrote a total of two fan fics, only one of which I completed. Like you, I'd rather create my own universe and characters. Fan fic is fine as a hobby, but it's never going to do much for developing your writing muscles. Creating a believable universe and believable characters is one of the hardest parts of writing, after all.

I knew that actually. Although the last time I ran into you was not on the Aquila but at a Context..I was there to chat with Maureen McHugh and ended up winning some sort of award in one of the writer's workshops.

Wow, our worlds aren't just small, they've practically collided. Sorry I don't remember that ... but I think half my brain is fungus now. We'll have to chat about what all else we have in common, since you seem to have the better memory!

Was that the Context that was held in Blue Ash? I think that was the last one I attended.

No..this was at a hotel in Columbus.x number of years ago. Laura Resnick I think had just published or was about to publish her first non romance novel. And I want to say you were working for Writer's Digest? And of course there were the MAMs

Yep, I worked for Writers Digest Books for seven years. Best job I ever had.

And you were in on the Malts After Midnight crew, too? Wow, my memory is worse than I thought. It's scary. And I feel like a total chump right now.

We will definitely have to sit down tonight and chat!
